SAFARI OVERVIEW:
Tour pace - This safari is spaced to give you a chance to enjoy the natural history of every site you visit.
Uganda has been described as the 'Pearl of East Africa' and was regarded as the most beautiful and potentially the richest country in East Africa. From the source of the White Nile on the huge papyrus-fringed Lake Victoria to the snow-capped Rwenzori Range, the luxuriant montane forests of the Virunga volcanoes, harbouring some of the last remaining Mountain Gorillas, to the extensive savannas around the awe-inspiring Murchison Falls, Uganda is an equatorial country of substantial contrasts and variety. No other area in Africa can match its amazing diversity of habitats and this richness is reflected in its incredible bird list of over 1000 species. Amongst these are many highly sought after birds, such as the unique Shoebill and numerous spectacular endemics of the Albertine Rift Valley, that are currently impossible to find anywhere else. This huge bird list is all the more remarkable given the small size of the country (approximately equal to Great Britain or the state of Oregon), making it probably the richest African birding destination. Uganda straddles the equator and borders the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan and Tanzania.

After arrival at Entebbe, we set out straight away to find the most iconic bird of the tour – Shoebill ! Hopefully with that species seen well we go northwards to the incredible Murchison Falls, where the Nile is forced through a six metre gap, forming the most powerful water surge on the planet. Boat cruises on the calmer stretches will allow us to watch and photograph the birds and animals which throng the banks. After two days of exploring the park's broadleaved woodlands, dry grasslands and forests, including nocturnal expeditions to find the incomparable Standard-winged Nightjar, we will move the short distance back to Budongo, the largest natural forest in East Africa.

Here, during our full day on the Royal Mile, a stunning forestry track rated as one of the premier forest birding sites in Africa, we will make our acquaintance with the first of many central African forest birds. Skulking alethes and illadopses sing from the undergrowth and we will work through mixed species flocks of greenbuls, eremomelas, crombecs and longbills, certainly top rate forest birding! Then on south and west to Kibale Forest. This reserve protects a diverse array of primates from the minuscule, nocturnal Demidoff's Galago to our closest living relative, the Chimpanzee. We will take expeditions to observe both these and many other species of primates and birds.

Straddling the Equator is the vast Queen Elizabeth NP boasting impressive crater lake scenery, expansive grasslands and forests; huge herds of Elephant and Buffalo, Lions, Leopards and a diverse array of birds. The famous boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, which links Lakes George and Edward, is one of the most productive birding excursions on the planet! Thereafter, we have two full days in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to more than half of the world's surviving Mountain Gorillas and 23 Albertine Rift Endemics.

Although the gorilla trek can be strenuous, staring into the eyes of a Mountain Gorilla from a few feet away is nothing short of a life-changing experience. A single Mountain Gorilla survives per 10 million people and to have the opportunity to meet these gentle giants and be part of their family group for an hour is a rare privilege indeed, rated by many to be the greatest wildlife experience on the planet! Close to the Tanzanian border, lies Lake Mburo National Park, geographically part of the southern savannahs and hosting a range of different birds and animals. This tour provides comprehensive coverage of Uganda, staying at some of Africa's top lodges. At the end of our time here we will have amasses a huge and very special list of memorable bird and mammal sightings, many of which are not available anywhere else in the world. You will also have experienced one of the most pleasant, colorful, hospitable and inviting countries in Africa.
